They lie. Most that you’ve heard about parenting is untrue. Here is my breakdown of the whole parenting situation obviously from the female perspective. I see parenthood as what I call “Rage and Roses.” Roses are a universal symbol of beauty and love and mushy stuff. All of that can be used to describe parenthood. The flip side of that is flaming unbridled rage. From conception on you at any moment can feel the urge to kill someone. I am not talking just about the random surge of hormones because this rage is seen in fathers as well. the phrase ” I’ll kill you” is said at least twice a week in my house. My husband I were walking in the grocery store when I was around 8 months pregnant and this woman almost hit me with her cart and God help her because the scowl and cussing she received was awful. Another good friend of mine was interviewing nannies and after finding one she liked, concluded the interview with ” Ok great so send me your references and by the way if you harm a hair on my kids head I’ll find you and kill you.” This is a 5’2″ Polish chic, but I do not doubt for a moment that she would.
Next, men, they do and more often than not experience postpartum depression. And before some of you women out there start kissing your teeth and running off at the mouth, shut your face you’re probably a single mom or are going to be. A wise man is afraid and nervous when he has a child. Then he gets wiser still and prays and lets go of his fears. But while he is going through the motions and is still in the adjustment stage just be patient ladies, it will pass. I have the honor of knowing some wonderful fathers despite the propaganda that says otherwise about black men.
Last but not least I am going to bullet point some valuable truths I have learned during this process:
- You do not have to gain a million pounds while pregnant. Stop making excuses.
- Men: NEVER EVER look below the knees. Stay ABOVE the sheet.
- Stay on your Kegels.
- A support system (For both parents) is worth more than you could ever imagine. Even if they are just bringing you a smoothie.
- Ignore everyone’s advice unless you WANT to take it.
And I will end with a quote from a good friend.
“If God said men had to bear children, there would be one yout on the planet”- Fadda
